How To Find The Best Marine GPS For Your Boat

To find the best marine gps, you have to do a lot of comparison shopping and reading about the different brands before making an informed decision. Do some comparison shopping, read the many reviews, and shop around a little bit before making up your mind which is the best marine gps navigational receiver for your needs. A marine gps navigational unit needs to use at least 12 of the 24 satellites calculating your position. All 24 would be the best, of course. And a larger screen for reading and viewing the water below the boat would be ideal. Some of the smaller, handheld or portable marine gps units are not the best because the size takes away from the clarity of the picture. There are several that are up to 7″ with a crystal clear LCD touchscreen so you are able to distinguish a rock from a fish when looking at the water or bottom of the lake or ocean.

Another item to consider when hunting for the best marine gps would be the amount of alarms it has on it. Some have alarms for the clock, off-course, anchor drag, too shallow, too deep, proximity, low battery, arrival, waypoint, water temperature and temperature rate of change and there are others, but the best marine gps would have all the alarms for safety reasons. Along with the alarms, one must consider the nightwatch and sunlight modes many of the best marine gps units use to help with the glare from the sun off the water or to help you find your way back in the darkness of the night.

You will need to decide if you are going to purchase a small, handheld or portable model or a larger, ’stay put’ type model of marine gps unit. The portable marine gps navigational units are smaller and fit in a pocket or a purse. However some of the bigger units can be taken out and used in a vehicle such as an RV or a car, but the portable ones are made for walking, hiking, biking and moving about the city with easy. Both styles of marine gps receivers come with the same amount of software and options, it just depends on which you prefer to have outside of the boat.

Do you want to be entertained? Some of the marine gps navigational units come with an audio voice player to play books on tape, others, you have to purchase a subscription to something like XM radio or a weather channel, which is not a bad idea since the weather changes rapidly and you want to be on top of things when the weather starts to change.

Above all, make sure the best marine gps unit has enough software to accommodate all you want to do while out in the boat, such as find fish or avoid large chucks of debris. These things can be done and avoided by the type of software available to download or that has already been downloaded into the marine gps unit. Do you have to purchase more antennas? Or extra cords for your computer to be compatible? These are questions you need to ask yourself and the salesperson behind the counter or on the other end of the website.

Free GPS Software

I took a look at some of the online offers for free GPS software and found, like many “free” offers there were often limits and provisos involved. Often the freeware is a scaled–down version of purchasable products. Sometimes the free product has restricted functionality with features disabled, other products are trial–based and are disabled after a certain time (hours or days or use).

An example of limited free GPS software can be found at GPS Utility. The downloadable freeware is limited 100 waypoints and 500 track points. (There are 65,000 of each in the registered version of their program.) The free program gives you a good opportunity to try before you buy, and this is the benefit of most free programs.

There are online sites that list various free GPS software and describe how to use the programs after you download them. Often individuals who have used the programs themselves develop the sites. These are great because they give you an unbiased interpretation of the benefits and disadvantages of the programs before you use them.

Using free GPS software you can download programs that allow you to retrieve and display aerial photos, topographical maps, USGS landmarks. There are programs available that allow you import scanned images and add latitude and longitude points and other data.

Free GPS software downloads are available for PDA units that are capable of communication with GPS receivers. With these downloads you can have a useful navigation assistant, location database manager, and GPS data converter.

Programs to manage GPS waypoint and route files are available for both PC and Mac users. The waypoints and route files can be saved or converted to various formats used by other mapping programs.

If you need to transfer information to and from your GPS receiver and your home computer or laptop there are several free programs that allow you to do so. There are also programs that allow Garmin GPS receivers to “talk” to one another.

Many of the programs listed here are directed at the hiking/trekker community, but there are also free programs available for auto GPS systems and marine navigational systems. I found a couple of marine navigation programs that allow you to download nautical charts and plotters.

There are free GPS software programs that allow you to download street maps that might not be included in your auto–navigation system. If you intend downloading in–vehicle software, make sure that it has audio capacity, an essential safety factor for motorists. One such program offers data for several countries with voice guidance in twelve languages.

Free GPS software is also available for downloading to your cell phone. This is mostly tracking software and can be phone specific. You might want to check with your carrier before downloading anything to your cell phone to make sure that it does not incur extra charges.

As satellites are constantly moving, it is helpful to know the optimal time for data collection in your area. There is free GPS software that includes an almanac to let you know the availability of satellites at any given time.

Some of the free GPS software is brand specific. Programs designed for a Garmin receiver may not work for a Magellan, so check out the specifications carefully, especially if you intend purchasing a registered version after your trial period. Other software works with most brands.

What Does Vehicle Fleet Tracking Mean To You?

Tracking the movements of a large fleet of company vehicles, trucks, light vans, or private cars, was a logistics nightmare in the majority of cases. In the days before GPS, fleet operation managers, was dependant on telephone calls from depots, roadside cafes or any other means possible, such as their famous but unreliable walkie-talkie system operated by the drivers to keep track of their vehicle’s movements. In most cases the walkie-talkie systems would be out or range of the control centers, so the drivers would pass on their message to other drivers who were within range, who would pass it on to another driver who was nearer the command center, till the message finally made it home. Then the command center would send a reply, and the whole process would be repeated in the opposite direction.

When you consider that some of the larger companies operate vehicle fleets than run into the hundreds them you can probably imagine that their control rooms were pretty hectic and noisy places to be.

However, over the last five years or so, the communications industry has made some major steps forward that have made life immeasurably easier. Two major advancements, linked to the same technology, began to be available for general use. The first was the mobile phone, which meant that the drivers could be reached anywhere and anytime. The other was the availability of GPS technology, which allowed the fleet operators ready access to the movements of the vehicle fleet around the clock and in real time.

This ability was a true godsend in vehicle fleet tracking, and reduced the necessity for the command centers to be in touch with the drivers by phone, only in the case of emergencies. There are 26 GPS satellites constantly circling the planet, each of them completing an entire orbit every 12 hours. Each satellite is technology capable of receiving and transmitting millions of signals every hour back to any amount of command centers back on the Earth’s surface. Working in recognized grids, the satellites recognize a transmission and correlate this information and use a triangulation of signals between any three satellites to calculate the user’s exact location. The command center can receive an updates on each vehicles movement every minute up to every fifteen, depending on how high a level of accuracy the command center needs to calculate each of their vehicle’s movements.

This ability to track their fleet’s movement has worked wonders for fleet operators in increasing the efficiency and reducing the running costs. Especially important when you consider that fuel sots are constantly on the increase and eroding the vehicle fleets operators already hard pressed profit margins.

So what are the principal benefits that real time GPS technology has brought to vehicle fleet operators?

Savings in fuel costs, as drivers become aware that their movements are being monitored, are reluctant to deviate form their fixed routes.

Savings in time, as drivers become aware that their movements are being monitored are reluctant to take unauthorized stops.

Savings in both fuel and wear tear of the company vehicle, as drivers are less inclined to use their vehicles for unauthorized journeys after hours.

Reductions in the risk to human life as drivers reduce their speeds.

Reduction in vehicle theft as the criminals steers clear of vehicles showing a GPS sticker. They know the vehicle can be easily traced and even immobilized, so they have gone back to stealing hub caps.

Reduction in insurance premiums as the insurance companies review statistics that show the vehicles that have GPS systems on board are involved in fewer accidents and are rarely stolen.

Increase in sales as customers realize that deliveries from the company arrive on time.
Just a few examples of the savings in costs ass well as the increase efficiency levels that can be achieved by vehicle fleet operators who install GPS vehicle tracking systems. No one who can argue that the communication revolution that GPS technology has been at the forefront has made the world a better place for vehicle fleet operators. And certainly quieter.
